OpenStreetMap and Crowdsourced Geospatial Data in Disaster Management
Many of the places most affected are also the least mapped - with large gaps in base maps of key infrastructure including roads, buildings, and waterways. Since the 2010 Haiti earthquake, HOT has mobilized more than 20,000 volunteers to map areas affected by natural hazards, both before, during, and after disaster. This mapping utilizes OpenStreetMap and engages volunteers through a participatory process both online and on the ground. The resulting maps and map data can be used in GIS tools and GPS devices both for navigation and analysis during disaster response and to plan risk reduction programs. HOT partners with many humanitarian organizations including the Red Cross as well as national and regional disaster management agencies to train and equip staff with the tools and resources to utilize OpenStreetMap in their work.
